Why Inmate Email?
It is a well established fact that communication between inmates and family outside is critical to the inmates' health and mental well being. Anecdotal evidence suggests that frequent and broad communication have a very positive impact on successful re-entry. Inmate eMail enables inmates to have a quick and more interactive alternative to postal mail while retaining the stated requirements of security and order in a correctional institution.
Moving from postal mail to electronic messaging also removes time consuming activities such as stamp sales, stamp inventory, mail search for contraband and delivery to inmates.
Core Features
Inmate eMail provides a way for the inmates to conduct their communication through securely controlled messaging. Sending and receiving is limited to specific approved individuals. Inmate eMail automatically destroys incoming mass/junk mail and all attachments.
Inmate eMail is a new and powerful tool for the investigators. It gives the investigative staff a permanent archive of communication. Staff can review messages prior to delivery. Inmate eMail automatically flags and holds messages that either contain certain keywords or those from well as messages from targeted inmates or outside parties. Messages can also be reviewed after the fact to determine trends or for historical review.
Messaging Stations
Inmates use the system on dedicated messaging stations that have no connection to the Internet. The message stations are highly secured systems running locked-down, single use-applications custom written for the corrections environment. All commercially available programs such as Internet Explorer, Outlook, Office, FireFox and WordPerfect are removed and/or specifically prohibited from execution. Only the custom designed messaging software is available. The system has been designed to work without a mouse. Keyboard shortcuts allow access to all system functions.
Printing
Special print stations can be ordered for use with the system where inmates can receive all printed output. These stations are not network printers and only the inmate can access their own mailbox and print pre-selected messages.
Institution Controls
The system has been designed with multiple classes of service to give institutions enormous control over system usage, availability and security parameters. Details of these controls are in the specifications on the following page.
Management
A secure browser based administrative system allows the institution's staff to perform a variety of management tasks such as setting institution controls, reviewing messages sent or received, inmate contacts and transaction activity. System administrators can also setup users, monitoring groups and message handling rules. Software security of the physical workstation is managed by through a firewall at the institution.
